Kindergarten Readiness

Setting the foundation for lifelong learning.

I know what you’re thinking…

Four years old seems way too young to be preparing for kindergarten.

Four-year-olds should be playing outside, running around, and getting messy. After all, it’s what they do best! But school districts expect kids to enter their kindergarten year already knowing basic skills, like writing their name, counting, and self-control. If your child doesn’t have these skills mastered, it’s easy for them to fall behind. Whether you’re concerned about your child’s first day of school or you’re looking to get a head start, I’ll help your kiddo have a smooth transition into kindergarten.

Kindergarten should be exciting, not overwhelming.

As the first day of school gets closer, you might be asking yourself if your child is ready for kindergarten, questioning what skills your child should know before their kinder year, and wondering how you can help prepare them for their first year of school. It also might be a time when all the “what ifs” and “worst-case scenarios” pop into your head, which is completely normal—your little one is growing up, and it’s okay to be nervous about what comes next.

The good news is I’m here to ease your worries and answer any questions you may have about kindergarten. I’ve taught kindergarten for the past five years, which means I know what your child is learning and what is expected of them. I also know how to teach them in a way they understand, which is super important for young learners. Best of all, littles that learn with me ALWAYS learn through play because playing is what kids do best!

SKILLS to know BEFORE starting KINDERGARTEN

Language & Literacy

Knowing the difference between upper and lowercase letters, understanding that letters form words, and being able to write their name.

Social-Emotional Skills

Sharing and taking turns, listening to instructions and following directions, and knowing how to use the bathroom by themselves (your teacher will thank you for this one!).

Numbers, Shapes, & Colors

Identifying and naming numbers 1-10, recognizing and being able to draw basic 2D shapes, and being able to name colors.

Fine Motor Skills

Holding pencils, crayons, and scissors correctly, putting a simple puzzle together, and using scissors to cut appropriate material (not cutting hair—this happens more often than you’d think).

Gross Motor Skills

Any form of physical activity, including running, jumping, catching a ball, walking up stairs, and playing sports.

Pre-Kindergarten Assessments

Pre-kindergarten Assessments evaluate kids to see if they’re ready to start kindergarten and identify skills that may need improvement. The assessments I give test skills like how well your child can hold a pencil, if your child can write their name, and how high your child can count. This helps me tailor tutoring sessions to fit your kiddo’s needs and helps me focus sessions on areas they might be struggling with.

Please note: I do not provide tutoring for social-emotional skills or gross motor skills. Play dates, sports, and extra-curricular activities are a great way to practice these.
